These continuously variable voltage auto transformers—commonly known as Variacs or Dimmerstats—feature a movable carbon tip mounted on a brush arm, which slides smoothly over a silver-plated commutator. The brush arm can be operated either manually or through a motor drive, allowing the output voltage to vary from zero up to or above the input line voltage.

Quality and Performance

Purevolt Variacs are ruggedly constructed and require minimal maintenance under normal operating conditions. They offer excellent voltage regulation with zero waveform distortion. The only components that require periodic inspection are the carbon tips and commutator. The smooth commutator track ensures low-torque operation and effortless adjustment.

  • Rated for 240V AC, 50/60 Hz single-phase supply

  • Three-phase models rated for 415V AC, 50/60 Hz, three-phase, four-wire supply

  • Output voltage can be smoothly varied over two ranges:

    • Zero to full supply voltage

    • Zero to approximately 12% above supply voltage

  • Suitable for indoor use with a maximum ambient temperature of 45°C

  • Single-phase units rated 240V input and 0–270V output

  • Three 240V units connected in star configuration provide 470V line-to-line three-phase output

  • For 480V open-delta applications, two 240V units are connected in series in each leg

  • Higher current requirements can be met by paralleling multiple units
